Innovative Circles - Using Google Docs for literature circles, a collaborative, technology based student-centered reading strategy. Students begin by selecting a book. Then they are introduced to the GATE icons of Depth and Complexity jobs in the Literature Circles: Unanswered Questions, Details, Patterns, and FAKEBOOK - http://www.classtools.net/FB/home-page .
STUDENT OBJECTIVES
Students will
• discuss, define, and explore unfamiliar words.
• use evidence in text to verify predictions by including the page number with their evidence
• ask relevant and focused questions to clarify understanding.
• respond to questions and discussion with relevant and focused comments.
• paraphrase and summarize information from the text.
• identify and analyze literary elements in text.
SESSION ONE
1. Present books that students will be able to read. Share the plot and main idea of the book as well as reading level.
2. Pass out sticky notes to determine top three choices for students. Collect sticky notes and place students into their groups. Assign meeting places for each of the groups.
3. Introduce the jobs to the class, and answer any questions that students have about these roles. Share the dates for the meetings. Students must meet 4 times.
4. One student in the group will be responsible for creating a literature circle group document in Google Docs. They will share this with the other group members and the teacher. Students will map out the jobs so that evidence of each job is represented at each meeting. Students will also determine how much of the book will be read for each meeting. Groups can divide the book by chapter or by page numbers.
5. Students will *Star* the literature circle group documents (SAVED AS Title of Book, meeting table and period).
SESSION TWO- SESSION SIX
All students will move to assigned location for literature circle meetings.
Students bring their Chrome Books and book to the meeting. The job and reading for the meeting must be completed before the meeting starts.
Only one Chrome Books at a time can be open. All other Chrome Books must be closed. Students share their jobs and pages numbers. Other group members open their books to read the paragraph or page that is referenced.
The teacher rotates through the groups sitting in on meetings furthering discussion, asking questions and monitoring communication.
Students work to make sure the evidence documents in Google Drive Include:
• The title and author of the book- underlined and capitalized appropriately.
• The meeting number, chapters or pages that were read for that meeting.
• A list of the names of the people in the group along with the job they completed for that meeting.
• Each student will type under a heading with their name and job listed.
• Each student will type their findings and insights for the meeting including page numbers. Each student should have at least 3 findings and it should be apparent that the reading was done and time was taken to think deeply.
• A link to the FAKEBOOK page must be included on the Google Doc.
SESSION EIGHT
All students meet to decide on a final project.
Groups write a project proposal that includes materials, a detailed outline of the project and which multiple intelligences will be used.
Students are given one week to complete their projects.
Final products are displayed with a printed copy of the job in the class for other students to see.
